Standard trips aboard Samsara are four nights in total from Carti to Sapzurro. This provides passengers with an additional night compared to most other sailing voyages to this increasingly popular destination.
You will be treated to all the amenities of and activities expected on any standard sailboat tour from Panama to Colombia, with the added bonus of experiencing the amazing and beautiful Colombian coastal towns of Sapzurro and Capurgana.
Your time aboard Samsara will be extremely chilled out, with a total of just 6 passengers plus crew its ideal for travellers who want to experience the serenity of the San Blas islands, without a large noisy group and avoiding the long ocean crossing to Cartagena.
Samsara comes equipped with its very own sailing dinghy ‘ZUMA’. Guests are welcome to try their hand at sailing themselves, helping out on deck and learning knots and other features. Hammocks are provided so you can relax in the shade of palm trees of your favourite San Blas island. Snorkelling equipment is also available so you can explore the beauty of nearby reefs.

Captain ‘YuYu’ began his life on the water at just 8 years old with a small sailing dinghy on lakes in his native Poland. As time went on he graduated to larger vessels and more remote waters.
By the age of 28 ‘YuYu’ was finally able to quit his job in Poland, leaving behind the rat race to fully devote himself to his passion for sailing. He has since logged over 50,000 nautical miles in the Baltic Sea, Mediterranean , North and South Atlantic and of course the Caribbean. he has worked on various vessels as crew and charter and delivery captained
Since 2011 he has been based almost exclusively in the San Blas Islands. During that time he has made over 100 crossings between Panama and Colombia as a charter captain on various boats, including a 50ft ketch, large catamaran and 64ft party boat.

SY Samsara is an ocean racer/cruiser categorised CARENA 40. She is 40 feet / 12 metres in overall length, designed by H Lemsra in Amsterdam and completed in 1983 in Germany. Captain ‘Yu Yu’ has invested a lot of time and money to recently refurbish the boat.
Its a typical live-aboard ketch with forward and aft cabins, a saloon seating/sleeping area and galley.

All berths are priced the same. If you want to be sure of getting a certain bed please let us know in advance so we can be sure there is availability for you.
Passengers will need to arrive to Carti by taking early morning ground transport from Panama City followed by short local boat transfer from Carti just offshore where Samsara will be waiting. You will board the boat from 09:00am – 10:00am
Once settled on board breakfast will be served before heading ashore to Carti Sugdup island. The village here includes a small museum which will give some insight into the the Guna Yala region you are about to discover.
The rest of the day and night will be spent anchored around the popular area of Chichime and Cayos Limones. Along with good snorkelling oportunities there are some great beaches here and the opportunity to take out ‘ZUMA’ the sailing dinghy.
More snorkelling, swimming , fun and relaxing awaits, this time in Cayos Hollandes. In the evening you can enjoy a coco loco and beach bonfire.
The final day within the islands will be spent at the picturesque Cayos Coco Bandero, one of the most popular areas for sailboats leaving Panama for Colombia. In the late afternoon you will head off in a south easterly direction towards the Colombian boarder region
You will start the day at sea sailing sea. You will have plenty of time relax, learn how to tie knots and hopefully catching some great fish. You should reach your final destination of Sapzurro by the evening and anchor overnight.
After breakfast on board your sailing trip will come to an end. Panamanian immigration officials are located in Puerto Obaldia and they will officially stamp you out of Panama. Following that you should take a short boat transfer to the Colombian town of Capurgana where Colombian officials will check you in. The captain will give you full guidance of the procedure.
Onward boat transport is available in Capurgana however its likely you will have to spend at least one night here, although a few more is recommend if you can.

ARE THERE ANY HIDDEN COSTS?
No. You will need to budget for your own transport to start the trip at Carti, and the ‘Guna Yala Congresso’ fee.
We advise you to you to take some extra cash in USD in case you want to buy souvenirs, additional snacks, beers and coconuts. There are no ATMs in Capurgana and few places accept card so it is advisable to take more cash to exchange to Colombian Pesos on arrival.
HOW CAN I PAY THE FINAL BALANCE?
The final balance must be paid in cash, USD only.
You should be sure to have this ready in advance of leaving Panama City.
Please remember your bank may restrict the amount you can withdraw when abroad in any 24 hour period. Please prepare accordingly.
HOW DO I GET TO CARTI?
We can book this for you at your request. Transport is available from any downtown hotel or hostel location. Pick-up times are normally between 05:00 and 06:00. From the city you will be taken to the mainland coastal area of the Guna Yala (San Blas) region.
From here a boat transfer will take you to the boat anchored offshore.
In all you should budget form the following;
– $25 ground transport
– $5 boat transfer
– $2 dock fee in Carti

WHAT SHOULD I PACK?
Before boarding you should separate all your belongings into two separate bags. One small/medium for anything you might need for the five day tour. You will keep this with you on the boat by your berth

– Swim wear
– Light clothing, T-Shirts & shorts, sandals
– Snacks, juices/soda, alcohol
– Light jacket/sweater
You main larger luggage will be stowed and difficult to reach, make sure no essential items are packed. We strongly advise you to protect this larger luggage with large plastic trash bags. Use one to line the outside and more for the belonging inside, just in case.
CAN I CHARGE MY PHONE/CAMERA?
Yes, at certain times. The captain will let you know when it is possible. We recommend switching it off to conserve battery when you are not taking photos.
DOES THE BOAT HAVING SNORKEL AND FISHING EQUIPMENT?

Your captain will likely fish with lines while sailing in certain locations. Using rods from the boat while anchored in the islands will probably not be possible.
The local indigenous population heavily rely on selling fish themselves. To ensure sustainable and responsible tourism the captain will abide by the locals wishes not to fish in certain locations.
WHAT WILL WE DO EACH DAY ?
When you are in the San Blas islands the captain will likely leave you to make your own decisions what to do.
The captain and crew can help you organize beach parties, bonfires and visits to local villages, however they are not tour guides and cannot babysit guests. Their main responsibilities are on board the boat.
You can of course enjoy snorkelling, swimming or just relaxing on the beach or boat.
DO I NEED AN ONWARD TICKET WHEN WE ARRIVE IN COLOMBIA ?
When entering Colombia via the Capurgana boarder the officials can be inconsistent. In most occasions it is not necessary however if may be advisable to print a non paid flight reservation in case they change policy.
You should also check if the passport you are travelling on has any special conditions upon entering Colombia (ie Canadian reciprocal fee, please check your status)
WILL WE ACTUALLY BE SAILING?
It won’t be possible to sail at all times. Navigating through the islands can be dangerous with many reefs.
Away from the islands the captain will sail whenever practical. Sometimes there may not be enough wind or too strong.
- Pre-book transport from your hostel/hotel to Carti
- Withdraw all the cash you need to pay the final trip balance, Guna Yala fee and anything additional BEFORE you leave Panama City. There are no banks or ATM’s after you have left the city
- Anything additional you may want to bring along for the trip such as alcohol, sodas, snacks etc should also be bought in advance. In some locations within the islands you can make purchases however choices are limited.
- Before leaving the city please also be sure to make a photocopy of your passport photo page and the page containing the entry stamp issued to you on arrival in Panama. This may be needed for immigration
- Separate your luggage into two bags. One small ‘day pack’ for what you will need for the time on the boat and your main bag/backpack which will be stowed away. It is also advisable to protect luggage with large plastic trash bags.
- Dramamine is recommended for seasickness. Be sure to buy before leaving Panama City. You may want to consider taking early on your final day in the islands them to start working in advance before you set sail towards Cartagena. You captain will advise.
